Measuring performance in education is very important. If an academic institution wants to deliver quality graduates through the coursework they offer, then they should know how to do this accurately.

Assessment of these research projects – pertaining to its funding – is then essential. It is important for an institution to evaluate what happens to funding – and not just for educational institutions but also for others in general. For instance, a university should ask itself just how successful funding has been. Was the portion allotted to buy media equipment really used to buy such equipment? What about sports equipment? These are just some of the questions that you need to ask when dealing with this particular quantitative metric.
Qualitative metrics, on the other hand, would be more difficult to deal with. Ask yourself, if you have growth in quantity, how then can you extrapolate improvement to garner a quantitative measure of that? Let us postulate that the population of graduates this year has increased when compared to that of last year. The translation of this quantifiable figure to a quantitative one of improvement should then be put in place. Now, it would be so easy to assume that there really is improvement just by looking at the figures. But if you think about it, there is also the possibility that the increase in population here should just be because of coursework degradation. Maybe there were fewer graduates last year because they were left behind, so to speak. Thus, there would be an increased number of graduates this year because the ones left behind would have graduated this year already. Now, this is the complete opposite of improvement. This is the challenge presented by qualitative metrics. There should then be a fixed system so as to process qualitative metrics.
